Post subject:  Problem with MyIDE-II using Apple Mac Mini

Seems that whenever I run the MyBios it corrupts the FAT32 root directory for the FAT32-Loader. I format the cf-card using MS-Dos FAT in the Mac. That and ExFAT are the only FAT options I can choose from.

When I look at the ramdisk's content It shows a lot of trash chars. Is that normal?

I have the latest workbook as of this date. The cf-card is a SanDisk ultra 30Mb/s 4gig.

Suggestions?

Not sure, did you INIT the card on MyBIOS first?
That will write a fat32-entry in the MBR and configure the rest of the space for MyBIOS-IDE usage.

After that you can format the fat32-entry on PC (do not know anything about mac) and select fat32/quick.
On a 4 Gig card, fat32 is about 1.8G (roughly half the size)

Then you can start copying the files needed to this drive.
Safely remove the CF-card (Mac will have this option too I guess)
You should be ready to go with the ATARIMAX fat32-loader.

I have folders like
R16
ROM
XEX, subdevided in LETTERS
OS_OLD

Works nicely :)

Yes I've followed the instructioins to the letter. After Init, when I made the boot partition of 720 sectors It showed as 1008 in the entry. Is this normal? Then I made the second, it reported the 65535 sectors correctly. I've also tried using only one 65535 sized partition.

The instructions say you should check the values for the drive geometry after doing the Init. How do I interpret the numbers reported?

The cf-card works good on the mac side even though the FAT32 loader don't see any files.

When I examine the drive in the drive tools app it reports MS-Dos FAT as MBR only. Ex(tended?)FAT are MBR and/or APT, but isn't recognized by the FAT32 loader.

My images are stored on the card with a few top folders, subdivided into letters, sometimes one more level (not more than 256 chars incl path). But the FAT32 loader sees all files perfectly until I run MyBios. Then it stops working. The machine still boots up with myDos perfectly fine.

720 rounded up to 1008 is normal, reserved are cylinders and 1 cylinder equals 1008 sectors.
65535 can't be rounded up, size is one word.

About the MBR: MyIDE-MENU only creates a entry in the table and reserves space.
After INIT, the space is unformatted and must be done on a PC (or other).
Can you check if you get about 1.8G of FAT32-space on your 4G card?
This is to check the MBR-entry.

On my PC I can also format in different formats, with a pull-down menu I select FAT32.
This is on my (256mb) card as MBR-entry:
00 00 00 00 0B 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 FF 01 00
Looks Ok to me. $0001FF00 sectors, start at $00000100, media-type $B = fat (small)

But then I do not know how Mac sees this entry correctly.
Do you have a PC or equivalent to check?

Once INIT and formatted, MyBIOS will never overwrite FAT32-space for MyIDE-usage.
So this is very strange.

CHS of a my 4G card reads
7768 16 63.
IS/IZ 16 2
Q
MBR-entry:
00 00 00 00 0C 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 0F 3B 00

The main reason is that the Mac does not format completely 100% compatible.

I have the same issue. That's why I finally installed Virtual Box (free) to run Windows XP on my MacBook Pro.

I'm not sure who's guilty here: Mac or MyIDE. Anyway: Mac OS X is not MyIDE riendly anyway, with all the crap the Mac leaves on every volume and directory (like .DS_STORE, .TRASH and so on).

If you could format your FAT32 partition on a Windows XP machine, then you have a big chance it keeps working, although that is still not secure.

I have had my share of issues with Mac OS X and Atari.

Besides that, Mac OS X is fabulous, but for this purpose it is pretty useless.

Yeah, I've finally bit the bullet and ordered a copy of Windows 7. I'm going to Boot camp it on my Mac. I'll let you know how it went.

After formatting under Win7 all seems to work ok so far.

Good to hear, no idea why Mac makes a mess of FAT32.....

I noticed that when formatting on the mac it says something like 680 Kb used. On Win7 it says about 2 Mb used. Maybe the mac doesn't leave room for the partition table (it says it uses only MBR). Could that be it?
