Post subject: | Dumping Tape/Disk Images |
Hello, I have been scouring this site and the AA forum for information on dumping original A8 tapes/disks to a shareable format to no avail. I'm a rookie here, so please forgive me in advance, if this should be common knowledge or if it's been asked and I am overlooking it somewhere. I have a couple of old games that aren't available on the atarimania site and think some people might be interested in them. If I could be pointed in the right direction, I'd appreciate any info on how this is accomplished. I have an Atari 800XL w/ MyIDE-II Thanks! ![]() |

Good question. What titles/media are we looking at? Tapes are the most difficult. They come in various formats. Single stage, multiple-stage (=most common), CLOAD-version and custom formats. Single-stage/CLOAD-versions you can dump to disk with various programs. I used to copy the data of multiple-stage to disk and add a loader using hack-methodes. Custom-formats I used to hack them and put to disk. Disks should be relative easy. When they have copy protection-schemes, you need to do some hacking too. You can copy them to image-space with MyBIOS. Then load the ATR-files on your PC with the MyIDE_manager. Grtz, Sijmen. |

Try to copy the disk into an image slot. If it does not run, zip/send me the ATR and I have a look. If protected, copy the original to an empty disk. Then copy the copy to an image-slot, zip/send me the ATR. Tape: Just boot it and look at the progress. If you boot in one go, it's single ![]() |

The problems I am facing are that my Temple of Apshai cassette is giving me "Error 143 AT LINE 0"'s and the Upper Reaches of Apshai & Curse of Ra are both Expansions, so I'm not even sure they'd load without loading the ToA program first. I tried both of those cassette's on their own, but got the same error messages. I am not very familair with the MyIDE-II and am trying to brush up on how it works, but it's a tad confusing. I find myself in lots of dead-ends, while trying to figure it out. In order to test the expansion cassettes(which on the outside, look to be in better condition than the ToA tape), I thought maybe I could use the MyIDE-II to load the ToA cassette image, then load the expansions via the 1010 tape drive, but not sure this is possible. I am also reading up on A82CAS right now. Thanks for the help so far ![]() |

Also, I am assuming these are CLOAD tapes, since that's the command to get them running ![]() |

They are all BASIC files, so it should be easy to convert. The images are only the files, not a DOS-disk. Just move the files in the ZIP to a ATARI-dos disk? Can you record the tapes, convert to MP3, zip and upload them? (Just connect a standard cassette player to your PC) The disks I already told how to share them. Later! Sijmen. |

Thanks Sijmen. I'm learning a lot here. I guess now that I'm starting to figure all this out is that in my original post, I was trying to ask if there was a way to use the MyIDE-II for both Cassette and Disk drive dumping. I don't have a 1050 yet, but do have a 1010, so I'll have to wait on checking the disk to see if it has degraded or not. Hopefully I will be able to use Image Space to get a copy of the ATR when I acquire a 1050 drive. Can the Image Space not load cassettes from an actual 1010 tape drive? Probably a silly question, but I am not very familiar with Image Space yet, so please forgive my ignorance. It looks like I will need to find or buy a cassette player to rip the audio from the tapes into my computer. Hopefully that won't be a total waste of time. I realize most of these disks and tapes have probably succumbed to bitrot. Thanks again for your time! |

Ah, ok. MyBIOS has NO cassette-drivers, sorry. These are replaced by IDE-stuff. Some cassette related vectors are still present, but only for compatibility reasons. You can record your tape on PC and use WAV-to-CAS or some program like that. Google for it and you find enough about it. Then you should be ably to create some files usable for Altirra on PC (atari-emulator), that has MyIDE-support for playing around. For as I know, you need a ATARI 1050 to read/convert disks..... Later, Sijmen. |
