Does anyone know of a video or instructions on how to do this? Going the other way (PC files to CF) is easy, but I need to know how to set up my CF so that it has a space for the files? Also, is it possible to copy individual files as opposed to an ATR file? My new pet project is to copy off old AtariWriter files I have on floppies so I can use them on a PC. I do have an SIO2PC ordered so I'll be able to hook up my 1050 drive to my PC, so I may not need to do this.

You need the 3rd party tools to transfer ATR images from/to CF, to be used on your PC.

If we are talking standard Atari DOS files, I would suggest you boot your Atari with MyBIOS.
Boot as normal, this will set D1 as drive on your CF.
Connect your 1050 as D3: (or any other drive ID that is free/not used by CF).
Enter MyDOS using the DOS command.
Copy files from D3: to D1:

If we are taking specific disks, I would boot up in IMAGE mode, holding START on the MyBIOS-screen.
Connect your 1050 as D1:
Select any empty slot.
Hit > enter a name and confirm with Y when the border is red.
Wait until diskcopy is finished.
Repeat this on other slots and other disks.

Remove CF en pop it in your PC, extract and save them as yourname.ATR

Do I need my Atari 1200XL in that chain? Remember, my cartridge is blank, but I do have older DOS disks. I was hoping I just needed the 1050 and my PC. The files I'm trying to copy are on Atari DOS disks.

I'm a long time 1050-2-PC adapter and Prosystem user (part of A.P.E software package) and using just a 1050 connected to the PC can only be used for turning floppy disks into ATR images or vice-versa. You need to use SIO-to-PC connecting your Atari and 1050 with A.P.E, and mirror mode on A.P.E selected, set as disk 2 or higher, and, a DOS on the Atari to copy the files from D1: (the 1050 floppy disk) to D2: (A.P.E mirror).
