Claus Buchholz, author of the ACE80 and ACE80-XL 80-column cartridges has posted all of the files necessary to make a cartridge, including his source files, docs, etc. These are posted at AtariAge at
http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.ph ... 9666&st=40

The only problem is the code is set up to put into an OSS "Black" bank-switching cartridge (or another work-alike). As designed, it loads its code into ram, then the cartridge turns itself off. Perhaps someone could adapt this to a 1 Mb cart? The actual code only requires 4KB

I have an original ACE80-XL cart, and I knew from the minute I first tried it, it is quite a bit faster than the usual 80-column software programs. For that reason, I think it is "special" and would be nice to provide a new flashcart "home" for it.

Anyone up for the challenge? (Way over my head...)

I give it a go.

question, can you be a beta-tester for 1200XL?
You are the only one who has a flashable OS in his system ;-)

Cheers,
Sijmen.

Terrific, Mr-A.!

Sure, I'm always very happy to test!

BTW, any update on OS-5? Aside from that one problem with MyDos that I had mentioned, it seems pretty stable.

Greetings,
Larry

OK, I used the ACE80XL-EPR file again.
Since Í like to hack, I still did not read the source file......
I needed to change one byte to make it 1Mb flash compatible.

The flasher I created thinks it needs to program 16 banks.
But there is only one, the first, which contains the ACE80XL.
So ignore the error message when it wants to read bank-2
The cartridge will be erased and the first bank programmed.

I tested it on my stock XL and I get 80 columns with BASIC.
Works great, tekst is very readable. (I use a AV-cable/Philips 20" TV)

Cheers,
Sijmen.

Outstanding! Thanks so very much, Mr-A. You have certainly helped give ACE80-XL a new "lease on life."

I am still amazed at how much faster ACE80 draws the screen compared to any other 80-column software device I've seen.

Thanks again,
Larry

Thanks! I am programming the cart now. Might have to get another 1MB cart or two.

Does anyone know if I could use this cart along with SpartaDOSX 4.41 on a 2nd flashcart?

For anyone that might be interested, I created a new label for the ACE80-XL (Atarimax) flash cart. It is posted at AtariAge at

http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.ph ... 9666&st=60

It is unfortunately missing the ACE logo as explained in the AA post.

Does anyone have the ACE80XL in a Multi-cart Studio Workbook or as a bin I can use on my MAXFLASH USB PROGRAMMER?

Let me see if I can make one by programming my 1Mb cart then dumping it back via the cart studio. I can read ATRs, but it doesn't like the 11kb ATR I have.

I verified this works on my 1Mb cart.

I downloaded it and it is a bin file, do you have a .mcw file of the flash cart Mr-Atari made?

No - but I burned it with the USB programmer. It loads BIN files.

Sorry for the delay - I've not been getting notified when my posts get responses. I have changed a setting.

I can't get it to work on mine, :(
I must be doing something wrong or maybe I need to upgrade the firmware?

Greetings Everyone!

Need some basic help from the "Gods" around...

I really, really like this little ACE80 Utility. It is one of those pieces of code that truly offers new functionality, yet manages to pull out the every bit of goodness the Atari HW has to give, AS IS, with nothing else except a humble cart.

I would like to re-create a) one version for LEFT-cartridge (I will try the one posted here in my 8Mbit cart, and see how it moves) and a b) RIGHT-Cartridge version, which I would absolutely love to have on the "Jay Miner" 800. Talk about some NICE use for that second slot.

EDIT:

Here are all the files needed: http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/99 ... ge__st__50

Any help here for the RIGHT-cartridge version would be sincerely appreciated. Let me know if it is possible at all.

Many thanks in advance!

Is there a right-cartridge version of the ROM?

The flash cartridge is a 'left cartridge' only. You would have to perform a modification to the hardware for the Atari to see it as a 'right cartridge'.

YES, there seems to be a right-cart version: it is the ACE80.EPR file (either 4K or 8K versions) on the link I posted (once there, look for a .ZIP file that has two ATR images, and the files are in-there).

MaxFlash Studio recognizes the ACE80.EPR file as a VALID Atari EXE file, BTW. I suppose that there has to be a minor/small change on that file to enable MaxFlash Studio flashing the cart with this particular image. (NOTE: I just re-read your post, and it seems that Flash-cart will not work as a RIGHT-one)...

...Ok. Is there any other valid alternative that would not involve physical surgery on the A800?

Its actually the cartridge you would need to modify. You would have to disconnect the RD5 output and connect it to the RD4 input, then disconnect the S5 input and instead connect it to the Atari S4 input. Both changes would have to be made by cutting traces on the cartridge and soldering connections.

Afterward you would not be able to flash the cartridge again until it was changed back, as the hardware/software all expects a cartridge in the 'left cartridge' memory area.

Thanks.

Sounds to me like killing a healthy cart. only for this purpose, though.

Now, any suggestions to make the code work on a LEFT-flash cartridge? I tried to flash the sample available in a thread here (test.zip) and I it will not boot properly from the Cart, once flashed. Now, the actual piece of code DOES boot on Altirra, stand-alone.
