I have another weird one -- my internal flash MyIDE works in one XL, but not another. The one that won't work is a known good, stock 800XL, except for the Quick & Easy Video upgrade and a power lead added to the PBI bus for the "snap on" 320XL ram expansion (expansion is not on the machine).

The MyIDE worked perfectly in a Newell 256K upgraded 800XL. I swapped the MyIDE into the other XL and it immediately goes to the 4.4I memo pad or locks up while trying to boot. I took the MyIDE out of the "problem XL" and put it back into the Newell machine and it again worked perfectly. I even went so far as to swap the GTIA chips, but to no effect.

Perhaps a bad/marginal 74LS138 (not socketed)?

Has anyone heard of something like this before?

With internal MyIDE-systems I have not found any problems (yet).
Sometimes some compatibility issues between IDE-media, but the interface is fine.
And I have a lot of systems tested......

The thing you can do is to connect the interface not to de buffered signals or visa versa.
Sometimes a slight timing difference makes the MyIDE reading errors.

Later,
Sijmen.

Bob Puff's "StabilXL" mod appears to have solved the problem. I applied the mod and the MyIDE started working.

I've got plenty of MB's, but I'd already invested time in the video upgrade, so I really was going to be bummed out if I had to do the video all over again on another MB.

This XL also has the Ram320XL, but I can snap off the ram expansion and use the Xl/XE OS with a PBI device. Pretty cool!

BTW, look on this page if not familiar with the "StabilXL" mod:
