I realize it's a long shot, but can one load 2600 images onto the multicart and play them on the 5200? I've seen a cart adapter for the 5200 for a 2600 cartridge so I thought I'd ask

No, it cannot.
The Atari 5200 does not have the same internal chipset as the 2600. The adaptor available for the 5200 basically has a complete Atari 2600 inside of it, and simply routes the video signals through your 5200 to your TV, via the cartridge port.
If you want a multicart for the 2600, your best bet is an Atari 7800 (which DOES have the same internal hardware as a 2600, and is fully compatible) and a Cuttle Cart 2 from Schell's Electronics. Unfortunately, this product is no longer available from Schell's, and no one else offers a 2600 multicart. Your best bet is to look around for someone selling it used. With these items no longer being available, expect to pay $200 or more if you can find someone willing to give theirs up, for the Cart alone.

Amazed at how much time has passed on the messages here.
One thing I suggest is to get a Super Charger. Those were the devices that let you download images via a cassette player, but you can connect up to a MP3 player. Amazing device, and what the Cuttle Cart 1 was based on.
