I recently came across an IDE to SD adapter (see below). I was curious if anyone has any experience with such devices a) in general and b) specifically with an internal MyIDE interface. Anyone?

Hmmm, it sounds very interesting. I indeed wonder if this would work with MyIDE.
Normally the IDE interface is 16 bits wide but MyIDE only uses 8 bits. (It only uses half of the disks capacity). I wonder if this 8 bit access would work correctly if you redirect it to a SD-Card. But if the adapter still supports the old fashioned IDE transfer modes, it think it should work.

I saw the seller lives in Hong Kong. Since I will be in Hong Kong for a few days in June, I will see if I can find this item in a local computer store to save $7.90 shipping costs 8)

Hmmm. Interesting gadget.
In theory I would say: yes this could work.

Well worth for me to buy and try.
I'll browse ebay to find one with cheaper postage to the netherlands.

Not sure if the pc "myidetool" software can transfer data to SD / etc.
But I can try that right now right here.....

Thanks for the link!

Cheers,
Sijmen.

...again back...

-5 minutes later-
-I changed my post-
-selected the wrong physicaldrive#-

Tested the PC software on some SD cards.
I used a sector-editor to create a valid MyIDE partition-table (chs and lba).

The myidetool 'sees' a correctly formatted MyIDE-drive!
:-)
So this part does work.

Now to find me a SD-to-IDE device with low shipping......

Cheers,
Sijmen.

I report when I tested it.

specs say: hot swapable (!) That's one plus above CF...

SD cards are much cheaper than CF cards and because they are used in so many devices, I have quite a few SD card lying around so I ordered one as well.

If it doesn't work with MyIDE, I hope I can use it as IDE drive in my Atari Falcon. I only don't see a switch on it to make it master or slave. So it seems only one device is supported. Thus it probably isn't possible to add it as slave to the Falcon next to the internal HD. But it can replace the build in 80 MB harddisk. Any spare SD card I have lying around is much bigger than that 8)

I believe it will work.

I thought of another question. Will the adapter support the CF 8-bit mode and Hias' modified movie player?

SD socket uses DIL spacing. Should be fairly easy to relocate the socket to a more convenient place than hidden inside my 800XL (probably right above the SIO socket). Can't really do that with CF.

Just got my order-conformation
Chinese holidays.....
->item will be shipped on 5 february :-(

I'll tryed the 8 bit movie upload (512b/sector) to see if it works.
video/audio data is stored on the right sector and sequence.
So this should work.

This means the IDE-SD converter is 8-16 bit switchable?
Would be great :-)

Cheers,
Sijmen

Sijmen, can you recommend any tools I can use to make my own MyIDE movies?

Just wondering if anyone has had a chance to test one of the IDE to SD adapters yet.

I received the adapter too yesterday. Although I have little time too, I managed to spend 30 minutes to try it out but I couldn't get it to work :(

I used a 512MB SD-card. The F-disk utility build into the 4.3 rom gave an IDE error when started. When I started it without an SD-card, the F-disk utility didn't gave an error. Then I inserted the SD-card and tried to init the card in automatic mode. The screen was flashing the rainbow colors and the leds on the adapter were blinking, but the returned CHS values were bogus. 1 head, 1 cylinder and 5 sectors or so.

Shawn Jefferson's MyIDE config program also gave an IDE error when started after which it stopped.

So at first sight there are problems. But I didn't test the adapter on a PC so I don't know for sure if the adapter is working. It certainly takes some more investigation. Maybe setting the CHS values by hand. Or maybe those adapters only support LBA mode and not CHS mode.

Attached the datasheet of the controller chip used in the adapter.
Maybe you can get some information from it what is supported.

There is not much info on the IDE capabilities but it says: "8/16 bit databus selection for task file register accessing". So I think the chip supports 8 bit access so at least the 8 bit access of MyIDE shouldn't be a problem.
